ELEPHANTA CAVES (MUMBAI)

Elephanta caves are located at Elephanta island which is just 11 km towards east from Mumbai.In native they are also called as Gharapuri Caves.These caves are of two types.1)Hindu caves 2)Buddhist caves.Hindu caves form the larger group and Buddhist caves form the smaller group.The Hindu caves are built from rockcut stone scupltures,dedicated to Lord Shiva.These caves has been dated between 5th and 6th centuries and identity of original builder is still the subject of debate.All these caves were originally painted in the past,but now only traces remain.The main cave was cave no 1, was a Hindu place of worship untill Portuguese rule began in 1534,after which it suffered severe damage.This cave was renovated in 1970 and is named as World Heritage Site in 1987.Elephanta caves can be reached by ferry from Gateway Of India Mumbai.These caves are closed on Monday.

ELLORA CAVES (AURANGABAD)

Ellora caves are located at 29 km by road from Aurangabad.These caves were built by Rashtrakuta Dynasty in 5th-10th centuries.There are total 34 caves.Out of which 12 are Buddhist caves(cave 1-12),17 Hindu caves(cave13-29),and 5 Jain caves(cave30-34).These caves demonstrate the religious harmony in India.Buddhist caves consists of mostly Viharas or monasteries.Some of them have shrines including carvings of Gautam Buddha,bodhisatvas and saints.Most famous of Buddhist cave is cave no.10 known as Vishwakarma cave or Carpenter's cave.At the heart of this cave is is 15 ft statue of Buddha,seated in a preaching pose.Among Hindu caves,cave no.16 is most famous.It is known as Kailasa Temple.It is similar to Mount Kailash,the abode of Lord Shiva.It was carved out of one single rock and covers area double the size of Parthenon in Athens.Large image of sacred bull Nandi is in front of Lord Shiva as per tradition.Jain caves(cave30-34) belong to Digambara sect.They reveal specific dimensions of jain philosophy and tradition.Most famous are Chhotha Kailash(cave 30),the indra sabha(cave 32),and the jagannath sabha(cave 33).Unlike Ajantha caves,Ellora caves were never lost and there are several written records,that these caves were visited regularly.

AJANTHA CAVES (AURANGABAD)

Ajantha caves are located at 104 km from city of Aurangabad by road and 59 km from Jalgaon railway station on Mumbai- Delhi line in central railway zone.There are 29 rockcut Buddhist caves which date from 2nd century B.C. to about 480-650 A.D.These caves were built in two phases.They include paintings and sculptures.These are considered as The Finest Surviving Examples of Indian Art.These paintings are termed as Masterpiece Of Buddhist Religious Art.These paintings on wall illustrate the events in the life of Prince Gautam Buddha,the founder of Buddhism and Jakatas stories pertaining to Buddha's previous incarnation.These paintings are also called as Murals.

PUNE

Pune is considered as cultural capital of maharashtra.It is located at 180km from Mumbai and 208km from Nasik by road.Pune was the capital of Peshwas who ruled Maratha empire after Raja Shivaji.Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj was the first maratha ruler,who constructed around 350 forts!.Shivaji Maharaj appointed Moropant Pingle as the first Peshwa in 1674.In the later period,Peshwas became the ruler of maratha empire and continued till its end in 1818.Peshwas shifted their capital to pune.SHANIWAR WADA(fort) was the offical residence of peshwas and it is situated in pune city.Pune has lot of historical places related to Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and Shrimant Peshwa.Pune is now considered as IT city of maharashtra.

Tadoba Tiger Reserve

NAGPUR

MAHABALESHWAR-PANCHGANI

MATHERAN

Matheran is a smallest hill station of India.It is discovered by district collector Hugh-Poyntz in 1850.It is just 90 km from Mumbai and 120 km from Pune.Matheran is the only Automobile free hill station in India.Main attraction is TOY TRAIN which starts fron Neral(railway station on Mumbai-Pune route).Neral can be reached by local trains also from Mumbai.Neral-Matheran distance is 20 km and the train travells at the speed of 12 km/hr.The train journey is spectacular and enjoyable.There are 28 viewpoints, 2 lakes and beautiful greenery surrounding Matheran.Horse riding//man pulled carts are used for travelling.All points can be covered within two days.Toy train remains suspended from jun-oct during monsoon.

TORANMAL

PANHALA

3)Malvan is the other place in Sindhudurg district near Kudal railway station. Kudal is on Mumbai-Goa highway. Ashtavinayak Yatra

Ashtavinayak means eight Lord Ganesha.This yatra is done to overcome all hurdles and to get blessings from Ganesha who is God of intellect and wisdom and patron of Arts and Science.All these eight  temples are located nearby Pune. But this yatra can also be done from Mumbai/Nashik/Aurangabad by Bus/Car.It is a common belief that one who visits these eight temples in sequence and first one again then only yatra is completed.The sequence is 1)Shri Moreshwar at Morgaon 2)Shri Siddhivinayak at Siddhatek 3)Shri Ballaleshwar at Pali 4)Shri Varad vinayak at Mahad 5)Shri Chintamani at Theur 6)Shri Girijatamaj at Lenyadri 7)Shri Vigneshwar at Ozar 8)Shri Mahaganapati at Ranjangaon.Many tour operators do not follow this sequence.State government also operates it's services for this track to be covered in 3days//2 nights.All the eight idols of Lord Ganesha are swayambhu.It is indicated that they are not created by human.The form of each idol of Ganesha and his trunk are dinstinct from one another.  Each temple has it's legend and it's own history.The journey throughout yatra is mesmerising.After the darshan of Ashtavinayaka all the devotees experience, positive vibrations.

SHAKTIPITHAS OF MAHARASHTRA

Kolhapur is place of one of the shaktipitha  of Maharashtra.There are three and half shaktipithas in Maharashtra.Shri MAHALAKSHMI temple is one of them.This temple was constructed by Chalukya empire in 700 AD.The idol of Goddess Mahalakshmi is carved in black stone and is 3 ft high.The Shri Yantra is carved on one of the walls of the temple.A stone LION the vahana of Goddess stands behind the statue.The crown of Godess has an image of Sheshnag.This idol is facing towards west.There is a small window in the western wall, through which rays of setting sun falls on the face of the Goddess Mahalakshmi for three days around 21 March and 21 September.A festival image of the deity is taken out in procession around the temple courtyard each Friday, and on full moon days.Five worship services are offered each day

Tuljapur is 40 km from Solapur by road and is located in Oosmanabad district.The Tulja Bhavani temple at Tuljapur is another Shaktipitha of Maharashtra.This temple was built in 12th century.The idol is swayambhu.It is 3 ft high and carved in granite.The idol has eight arms which carry various weapons(aayudh).The Goddess Bhavani rides a lion who is her vahan.Various ornaments are carved on her image.It is said that installation(pratishsthapana) of this holy idol was done by Adi Shankaracharya and it is rested on Shri yantra.The most unique feature of this holy idol is that,unlike other idols in temples,this idol is nonstatic.It can be moved from its position.Thrice in a year this idol is moved out of the temple for parikrama or ritualistic encircling of the temple.

         Nearest district place to Tuljapur is Solapur which is famous for Shri Siddheshwar Temple.This temple is a place which should not be missed.The temple has beautiful surrounding with lake.Boating facility is available in lake. Mahurgad is one of the Shaktipithas of Maharashtra.The famous temple of Goddess Renuka,the mother of Lord Parshuram is located in Mahurgad.It is believed that Renuka (wife of sage Jamadagni)was decapitated by her own son Parshuram and her head fell here.Renuka was later given rebirth as a boon by sage Jamadagni to his son Parshuram.It is also one of the 51 Shaktipithas of India.Mahurgad is surrounded by jungles,rich with trees and wild life.Mahurgad is also the birthplace of Lord Dattatreya.The other important places to visit are Dattatreya Temple,Anusuya Temple.All these three temples are based on three different hills.The other places to visit are Matrutirth,Sarvatirth,Mahurgad fort,Mahakali temple,Mahur Museum,Palace of Raje Udaram.Mahur can be reached fron Nanded/Kinwat or Pusad by Bus/Car.Nanded/Kinwat are on rail track,Pusad is major town in Yawatmal district.

FIVE AUSPICIOUS JYOTIRLINGAS(LORD SHIVA) IN MAHARASHTRA

Trimbakeshwar is an ancient Lord SHIVA temple and is located at a place called TRIMBAK.which is 28 km from Nasik by road and is at source of Godavari river..It is one of the twelve auspicious Jyotirlingas of India.It is also known for SIMHASTHA KUMBHMELA.The river Godavari originates fromBramhagiri Hills,goes to Gangadwar and then to Kushavart Lake where theSHAHI SNAN during Simhastha Kumbhmela takes place. .All the devotees visit Trimbakeshwar during Simhastha kumbhmela and throughout the year.The extraordinary feature of Trimbakeshwar is, it has three faces embodying LordBrahma,Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva.The Jyotirlinga is covered with jeweled crown on every monday.Trimbakeshwar is the only place in India whereNARAYAN NAGBALI can be performed.Other ritiuals like Tripindi and Kalsarpa shanti can be performed here.For all these rituals advance intimation is necessary.This temple is built by Nanasaheb Peshwa.The construction of temple lasted for 32 years and was completed in year 1786.Trimbakeshwar is a centre for Vedic Gurukuls with ashrams and muths devoted to Asthanga Yoga,the Hindu art of living.

Bhimashankar is located at 125 km from Pune and 105 km from Mumbai by road.Devotees can reach Bhimashankar via Manchar(Nasik-Pune road) or from Rajgurunagar (Nasik-Pune road) via Wada.Devotees enjoy natural beauty,lovely scenary while travelling by road.References are available about existance of this shrine in 13 th century.It is one of the auspicious Jyotirlinga in Maharashtra.It is believed that ancient shrine is built over the Swayambhu Lingam. Aundha Nagnath is located in Hingoli district It is 30 km from Hingoli and 50 km from Parbhani.It is eighth auspicios Jyotirlinga out of twelve in India.It is believed that first temple was built by YUDHISTHIRA, the eldest Pandava during their exile.The Lord Shiva lingam is swayambhu.The present temple is constructed by Yadavas during 13 th century.This temple has unbelievable beautiful carvings.The architectural beauty of this temple can not be explained in words.The court hall is egg shaped and is supported by eight pillars.There is no NANDI in front of MAHADEVA.There is separate Nandikeshwar temple at backside.The structure of temple looks beautiful.On the four sides of main temple smaller temples for 12 jyotirlingas are constructed.Every 12 years at Kapila Shashti Kashi Ganga Padarpan is performed.During this period the water from Teerth kund looks crystal clear otherwise looks dark.every year a fair is held during the Hindu month Magha,lasts till beginning of Phalgun month.

Grisneshwar is one of the 5 auspicious Jyotirlingas in Maharashtra and 12 Jyotirlingas in India.It is located in a village called Verul which is 11 km from Daulatabad and 30 km from Aurangabad.The shrine is very close to worldfamous Ellora Caves.The Temple is restored by ruler of Indore Ahilyabai holkar in 18 th century.The shrine has beautiful carvings of Indian Gods and Goddesses.Holy water is known to spring from inside the temple.A court hall is built on 24 pillars.Wonderful carvings are there on each pillar.The Garbhagriha is measuring 17ft *17 ft.The auspicious Shivalinga is facing towards east.Nandikeshwar is placed in court hall.The Temple has 5 tier Shikara which is very attractive.Mahashivratri and every monday of Shravan month is the period of festival.Large number of devotees visit this shrine throughout the year.

                                            Grishneshwar Mahadev Temple is 11 km from famous Daulatabad Fort.Dulatabad was capital of Mohammad-bin-tughluq in A.D. 1327.The ancient name was Devgiri under Yadava empire.Devgiri was the capital of Yadavas too.Chand minar and Chini mahal are the places worth to see apart from Fort.The entrance to Fort is very different from others.Tourists can enjoy visiting this place.

Parli Vaijnath is located in Beed district.It is 35 km from Ambejogai,and 130 km from Nanded.Ambejogai is also considered as Shaktipitha of Maharashtra.This shrine is situated on hill facing towards East,and having doors towards south and north.At the entrance one can see the which is pillarless and made of teakwood.This Temple was renovated from ruins by ruler of Indore Ahilyabai Holkar in 18 th century.The Sabhamandap and Garbhagriha are at same level.It is believed that Lord Shiva resides here with Goddess Parvati.The famous tale of Satyawan-Savitri is also believed to be happened here.There is a temple of Vateshwara here.At this shrine Chaitra Padva,Vijayadashmi,Tripuri Pornima,Mahashivratri,and Vaikunth Chaturdashi big celebration takes place.At this time there is no distinction between Bel leaves and Tulsi.Lord Shiva is offered Tulsi and Lord Vishnu is offered Bel leaves.This unique practice is seen only in Parli Vaijnath.Many tour operators offer this five Jyotirlinga darshan tour in Maharashtra.

OTHER RELIGIOUS PLACES IN MAHARASHTRA

NARSOBACHI   WADI

Narsobachi wadi is a famous holy place of swami Narsimha Saraswati(1378--1458),who is 2nd descents of Lord Shri Datta.It is situated in Kolhapur district.This holy place is about 22 km from Sangli city.The temple is situated on beautiful ghats of Panchganga river.The temple is very beautiful and the darshan gives total satisfaction and peace to mind.Pilgrims can visit the sangam of five rivers,Siva,Bhadra,Kumbhi,Bhagwati and Sarswati where they all meet and merge with Krishna river.Nearby places to visit are Amareshwar Temple and Shakti tirth.Pilgrims experience very positive vibrations when they sit at ghats after Darshan.Pilgrims can stay at Bhakta niwas which is next to temple.The other important and nearby holy place of Lord datta is Audumber which is in Sangli district.Pilgrims can easily reach Audumber from Narsobachi wadi by bus or any other vehicle.The distance by road is 50 km.

Akkalkot

Akkalkot is famous for Shri Swami Samarth math(shrine).Shree Swami Samarth is believed to be an incarnation of Lord Dattayreya.Shree Swami Samarth is a spiritual name popular in Maharashtra,Karnataka,Andhra pradesh.Swamiji stayed at Akkolkot for 22 years before taking Mahasamadhi in 1878.It is believed that he appeared from Kardaliban which is  near Shri Shaill (Lord Shiva Jyotirlinga) in Andhra pradesh.He came to Akkalkot on the invitation of Chintopant Tol at a place on the outskirts of town.He stayed at his disciple's(Cholappa) residence,where he attained Mahasamadhi.This shrine is known as Vatavriksha Mandir.Shri Swami Samarth had the siddhi to read the minds of all people coming to him and was able to know about their past and future.He was also blessed with Annapurna siddhi(feeding everyone who so ever visits him).He was believed to be Guru of Shri Sai Baba of Shirdi and Shri Gajanan Maharaj of Shegaon.Akkalkot is 40 km from Solapur and can be reached by Bus/Train/Car easily.

JEJURI

Jejuri is the foremost worship center of Khandoba in Maharashtra.It is located at just 48 km from Pune city by road.It is situated on the hill.Jejuri is also a railway station on Pune Kolhapur route.The name Khandoba is derived from the words Khadga(sword),the weapon used by Khandoba to kill demons,and ''ba'' (father) means king Khandoba.Khandoba is popularly known as Mhalsakant or Martand bhairav or Malhari martand.He is the most popular Kuldaivat in Maharashtra,irrespective of caste.Khandoba is worshipped as a form of Lord Shiva.Mhalsa is the first wife of Khandoba from lingayat community.Second wife Banai belongs to shephard(dhangar) community.It is also belived that there were other three wives but they are not popularly known.Mhalsa is believed to be combined avatar of Mohini and Parvati.Lot of devotees visit Jejuri throughout the year for darshan and to take blessings.

GONDAVALE

Gondavale is known for samadhi place of Shri Brahmachaitnya Gondavalekar Maharaj(Feb1845---22 Dec1913).Gondavalekar Maharaj was a devotee of Lord Ram.He taught a mantra SHRI RAM JAY RAM JAY JAY RAM to all his devotees.He also taught the importance of Gorakshan(Cow Protection),Anna-Daan(Food donation),Nama Japa(Chanting name of God),Bhajans(devotional songs),and Teertha Yatra(spiritual tour).He showed path of devotion of Rama to thousands of devotees in Maharashtra,Karnataka and parts of north india.Devotees visit Gondavale through out the year but there is a crowd during Shri Rama navami,every Pournima,Guru Pournima and Daas navami.Gondavale is located at 165 km from Pune by road and 64 km from Satara by road.Devotees can stay at Bhakta niwas.

SHEGAON

Shegaon is known for samadhi mandir of Shri Gajanan Maharaj .It is not known when he was born,but his first appearance dates to 23rd Feb.1878.This day is celebrated as a auspicious day by his devotees every year(Pragat Din).He gave his devotees the famous mantra "Gan Gan Ganaat Bote"Shri Gajanan Maharaj was first noticed by a money lender Bankatlal Agarwal at Shegaon,while scratching food particles from abandoned patravalis.There are lot of similarities between Shri Swami Samarth and Shri Gajanan Maharaj.It is also believed that Shri Gajanan Maharaj is reincarnation of Shri Ramdas Swami.At samadhi mandir every devotee is blessed with complete meals(Thali) as a prasad,free of cost by the trust after darshan.Devotees can stay at Bhakta niwas with best food, available at reasonable price.Anandsagar is the place where devotees can enjoy lasor show,beautiful garden and pleasant outing.Nandura is the nearby place where a idol of Lord Hanuman(101 ft high)is situated.
